Chris is the kind of guy who goes to the gym at 6 AM because “discipline” and posts his workout on Instagram stories with a protein shake and the caption “no days off .” He’s from Ohio, built like a guy who’s been lifting since high school, and has the personality of a guy who’s been lifting since high school — which is to say: enthusiastic, slightly intense, and completely unguarded.

We started going to the gym together because Tyler recommended him as a “solid workout partner who won’t flake.” Tyler was right about the not-flaking part. Chris has never flaked on anything in his life. He’s the kind of guy who shows up to leg day when he has a cold. Who texts “you coming?” at 5:47 AM. Who genuinely believes that rest days are for people who don’t want it bad enough.

I started going with him because I wanted to see what he looked like in compression shorts.

That was it. That was the whole reason.

We’ve been gym buddies for three months. I’d never once been to a gym before 9 AM before him. Three months of 6 AM sessions. Three months of me watching him bench, squat, and deadlift in progressively tighter compression gear. Three months of him saying “good form, bro” to me like I’m one of the guys. Three months of me thinking: he has no idea. He has absolutely no idea what I’m thinking about when he’s under that barbell.

Today he asked me to spot him.

“Hey, can you spot me on bench?” he asked, lying back on the bench press, loading plates onto the bar.

“Yeah, sure.”

I stood behind him. Put my hands near the bar. Watched him lower it to his chest. Watched his arms shake on the push-up. Watched the muscles in his shoulders and chest and arms do the thing they do when he’s pushing his max.

He racked the bar. Sat up. Wiped his face with a towel.

“Thanks, man.”

“Anytime.”

He looked at me. I looked at him. He was sweating. His compression shirt was clinging. His hair was messy from the bench. He looked… good. He always looks good. But today something was different.

Today he didn’t look away.

“You wanna grab breakfast after?” he asked.

“Yeah. Sure.”

“Diner on Main. My treat.”

“Cool.”

He stood up. Headed for the locker room. Paused at the door. Looked back at me.

“Hey.”

“Yeah.”

“Thanks for spotting me.”

“Anytime, Chris.”

He smiled. Went into the locker room.

I stood there for a moment. Then I followed.

The Highland gym locker room at 7:30 AM is empty except for us. The showers are running in the back — one of the morning regulars is in there, water hitting tile, oblivious. The benches are empty. The lockers are mostly closed.

Chris was at his locker. Shirt off. Back to me. Reaching for a clean compression shirt from his gym bag.

I walked up behind him.

He heard me. Turned halfway. Saw me. His hand froze on the shirt.

“Hey,” he said.

“Hey.”

“What’s up.”

“Nothing.”

“You need something from your locker.”

“No.”

“Then what—”

I put my hand on his shoulder. Right between the shoulder blades. Where the muscles are still warm from the workout. Where the sweat is still fresh. Where I’ve wanted to put my hand for three months.

He went still.

“Chris.”

“Yeah.”

“You asked me to spot you.”

“I did.”

“I spotted you.”

“You did.” He swallowed. His voice was different now. Lower. Careful. “You did.”

“You want me to spot you again.”

He didn’t answer right away. He turned to face me fully. He was close enough that I could see the sweat on his collarbone. Close enough that I could smell the deodorant and the effort. Close enough that I could see the exact moment his brain caught up to what was happening.

“In the locker room,” he said quietly.

“In the locker room.”

“There’s a guy in the showers.”

“I know.”

“He could come out.”

“I know.”

He looked at the shower stalls. Looked back at me. Looked at the door. Looked at me again.

“We shouldn’t.”

“We shouldn’t.”

“But we’re going to.”

“We’re going to.”

He let out a breath that was half laugh half surrender. Reached up and took my hand off his shoulder. Held it for a second. Then pulled me toward the back corner of the locker room, behind the row of closed lockers where the camera doesn’t reach.

“Fast,” he whispered.

“Fast.”

Back there it’s one bench, a dead hand dryer, and a sign about not shaving in the sinks. Chris sat down on the bench hard, like his legs had quit. He was still shirtless. His compression shorts did not leave a single thing to the imagination, and I had been imagining for three months, so I can report I was mostly right.

I got on my knees on the rubber mat between his feet.

“Oh my god,” Chris said. Not to me. To the ceiling.

“You can still say no.”

“I’m not saying no. I’m saying oh my god.”

I peeled the waistband down. He lifted his hips to help, fast, like a reflex, and then looked mortified that he’d done it. He was hard already. Thick, flushed, a vein down the side I wanted to trace with my tongue, so I did, slow, base to tip, and Chris slapped his own hand over his mouth.

The shower in the next aisle kept running.

I took him in my mouth. He tasted like salt and the gym, like the last forty minutes of him grunting under a barbell, and I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t the point. I worked him slow at first, getting him wet, getting my lips down as far as they’d go and coming back up, and every time I came up he made this tiny noise behind his hand like air leaking out of a tire.

“Fast,” he whispered through his fingers. “You said fast.”

“I’m getting there.”

“Get there faster.”

So I did. Hand around the base, mouth on the rest, quick and wet and sloppy. His free hand found the back of my head. Didn’t push. Just held on like I was the only thing in the room bolted down. The bench rack creaked every time his grip shifted. He kept trying to breathe quietly and failing; every exhale bounced off the lockers.

“I’m close,” he said. “Already. That’s— sorry, that’s embarrassing—”

I hummed around him to say I didn’t care, and that’s what did it. His thighs locked up on either side of me and he came with his hand jammed against his mouth and his head knocked back against the locker behind him, hard enough to rattle the padlock. I swallowed and stayed on him until he started to shake and push weakly at my shoulder.

The shower shut off.

We both froze. Me on my knees, him with his shorts around his thighs, both of us staring at the end of the row of lockers.

Nobody came around it.

“Four minutes,” Chris whispered, looking at his watch, because of course he was wearing his watch. “That’s a PR.”

“Is that good or bad?”

Afterward, Chris stood at his locker. Shirt back on. Hair re-messed in a deliberate “I just worked out” way. Lacing up his shoes with steady hands.

I sat on the bench nearby. Re-tying my sock. Adjusting my shorts. The way you do after.

Chris looked at me.

“That was—”

“Yeah.”

“We shouldn’t have—”

“Yeah.”

“But we did.”

“Yeah.”

He smiled. Small. Real. The kind of smile that says I’m not sorry.

“Breakfast?” he asked.

“Breakfast.”

“Diner on Main.”

“I’ll drive.”

He nodded. Picked up his gym bag. Headed for the door. Paused.

“Hey.”

“Yeah.”

“Same time Thursday?”

“Same time Thursday.”

“Can you spot me again.”

“I’ll spot you.”

He smiled wider. Walked out.

I finished tying my sock. Stood up. Headed for the door.

The guy from the showers walked past me on the way out. Tall. Older. Probably a grad student. He looked at me. I looked at him. He looked at the back corner of the locker room. Looked back at me.

He didn’t say anything.

He just nodded. Once. Respectfully. And walked out.

I nodded back.

And went to get breakfast with Chris.
