— “names it wrong on purpose”

tuesday. 9:41pm. he texted the group chat first, the one with his two coworkers, “done for the night, dead,” and then he texted me separately, “u up.” not “hi.” not “missed u.” just “u up.” like i’m a switch he’s checking is on.

i was up. i’m always up when he’s got a hard day. i keep the door open on tuesdays. that’s the arrangement, except it was never his arrangement. i left it open. he just thinks he walked through it.

he came in with his tie still half-loosened and his shoes not even off, just kicked by the mat. didn’t say hello. stood in the hallway and looked at me where i was on the floor already, back against the couch, legs out, phone in my lap like i’d been waiting. which i had.

“work tried to kill me,” he said. that’s his version of a greeting now.

i put the phone down. didn’t stand. just looked up at him from where i was. “c’mere,” i said.

he sat on the couch above me and i moved between his knees without being told because that’s the part he likes, the part where i don’t make him ask. he hates asking. he’s told me. says it ruins it, having to say the words. so i never make him. i read the room the way he taught me without meaning to, and i go to my knees on the rug and i look up and he’s already looking down and his hand comes to my hair like it’s the most natural thing in the house.

“this isnt gay,” he said, quiet, almost to himself. “it’s just stress relief.”

i didn’t say anything. i never do when he says that. i just opened my mouth and let him push in and he made this sound, halfway between a sigh and a groan, the one that means he’s home now, the day is off him. his other hand found the back of my head and he held, not pushed, just held, and his hips moved up slow and he watched my face the whole time, eyes dark, mouth a little open, and he said it again, softer, “just stress relief,” like if he said it enough times it would be true, or like saying it was the only way he was allowed to have it.

here’s what i know that he doesn’t. the first time he said that, months ago, he couldn’t look at me after. he’d finish and sit up and pat my head like i was a dog he felt bad about and go wash his hands and not meet my eyes in the mirror. now he watches. now his hand stays in my hair and his thumb rubs my temple while he moves and he calls it relief while he’s inside my mouth and the word is a lie he tells himself so he can have what he wants without admitting he wants it.

i like that about him. i like the lie. it’s the shyest thing a man can do, name the thing wrong so he’s allowed to need it. some guys, they build a wall so high they’d rather not get off than admit a boy on his knees does something for them. he’s not those guys. he names it wrong on purpose and then he lets me anyway. the denial is just him being embarrassed about how much he needs me, and that embarrassment is the hottest part, honestly. that he’ll say “not like that” with his cock in my throat and his hips pushing up like he means it.

he got close. i could tell by the way his hand tightened, by the way his breath went short, by the way he said my name instead of the word for what this was. “luna.” just that. like that was the only true thing he’d say all night. i swallowed and stayed there after, breathing against his thigh, and when i looked up his eyes were somewhere on the wall behind me and his hand was still in my hair, gentle now, almost absent.

i rested my cheek on his leg. “good?” i said.

he nodded. wouldn’t look at me. his thumb rubbed my temple again, small circles, the way you’d pet something you felt sorry for and owned at the same time.

“thank you,” he said, to the wall.

“anytime,” i said, and meant the word the way he means his word. anytime. the door’s open. that’s the deal.

he patted my head then, the awkward pat, the one that means he’s done and embarrassed and fond all at once, and he stood up and went to the bathroom and i heard the water run and i stayed on the rug for a minute, knees sore, mouth used, and i smiled at the ceiling because this is my favorite part of tuesdays. not the part where he uses me. the part where he can’t look at me after, and pats my head instead, and thanks the wall. that’s the part that tells me he feels it. that he’s not as casual as he pretends.

i got up and folded the rug corner back and went to the kitchen and poured him a glass of water and set it on the nightstand by the bed, because he always gets thirsty after and never remembers to get up. then i climbed in next to him, still in my clothes, and he was already half-asleep on his side facing the wall and he reached back without looking and found my hand and held it.

“night,” he mumbled.

“night,” i said.

and i lay there holding his hand while he slept and i thought about the door. the one i left open. the one he thinks he found. he walks through it every tuesday and calls it stress relief and pats my head and falls asleep holding my hand and he has no idea he’s the one who’s kept. that the door being open was never his idea. that i built it, and i left it open on purpose, and the only thing he’s holding the key to is my hair.

some nights i want to tell him. some nights i want to sit up and say, babe, you’re not relieving stress, you’re coming home. but i don’t. because if i tell him, he’ll get embarrassed and build the wall back up and stop coming on tuesdays, and i’d rather have him wrong about the word than not have him at all.

so i let him have his word for it. stress relief. fine. he can call it that. he can call it nothing. but when he’s done and soft and won’t look at me and his hand is in my hair like he can’t quite let go, i want to ask him one thing, just one, before he falls asleep.

call it stress relief. or call it me.
