At first, Owen forgot his jacket.
By the fifth time, Adrian understood the system.
They were both twenty-nine, peers in neighboring departments, close enough professionally that work chat gave them plausible reasons to message and far enough apart that none of those reasons needed to last forty minutes.
At 5:22 Owen would appear beside Adrian’s desk.
“Quick question.”
There was never a quick question.
At 5:41 Owen would leave.
At 5:44 Adrian would notice the jacket on the chair beside him.
At 5:47 work chat:
Owen: forgot my jacket again
Adrian: shocking
Owen: can you guard it with your life
Adrian: no promises
Then Owen would return twenty minutes later.
“Terrible memory,” he would say.
The sixth time, Adrian wore it.
Owen stopped three feet away.
“That’s mine.”
Adrian looked down at the dark bomber jacket.
“You keep leaving it in my office.”
“Looks good on you.”
The sentence arrived too quickly to be accidental.
Adrian touched the collar.
“You want it back?”
Owen looked at him.
“Not yet.”
Neither moved.
Work chat pinged on Adrian’s monitor.
A message from Owen.
Even though Owen was standing directly in front of him.
i am being extremely normal about this
Adrian laughed.
Typed back:
visibly
Owen looked at the screen over his shoulder.
“Coward.”
“You messaged me from three feet away.”
“Different issue.”
Adrian stood.
The jacket settled around him, still carrying Owen’s cologne.
“Why do you keep leaving this here?”
There were a dozen possible jokes.
Owen used none of them.
“Because it gives me a reason to come back.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You know you can just come back.”
“I know that now.”
For once, neither of them reached for a joke.
The truth was already doing enough.
Owen looked at Adrian in his jacket.
Adrian let him.
“Can I kiss you?” Owen asked.
“Yes.”
They kissed beside the desk while the jacket stayed on Adrian’s shoulders.
Hands at waist.
Forehead to forehead afterward.
Somebody’s elevator chimed down the hall and both of them stepped apart automatically.
No panic.
Just workplace reality.
Owen glanced at Adrian’s monitor.
“We should probably not use company chat for this anymore.”
“Strong governance.”
Owen held out his phone.
“Number?”
Adrian stared at him.
“You have my number.”
“I have your number in the team directory. That’s spiritually different.”
Adrian laughed and took the phone.
He entered his contact directly.
Owen immediately sent:
hi
Adrian’s phone buzzed in his pocket.
“Powerful opening.”
“I’m nervous.”
That honesty hit harder than the kiss.
Adrian texted back while Owen watched.
my place friday?
The typing bubble appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Finally:
yes
Then:
can i leave something there too
Adrian looked up.
“What?”
Owen touched the sleeve of the jacket Adrian was still wearing.
“Maybe the jacket.”
Friday, Owen showed up at 7:30 with a bottle of wine he clearly hadn’t chosen himself and no jacket.
Adrian noticed. Owen noticed him noticing.
“It’s on your chair,” Owen said. “At work. I left it there on purpose at 5:41. Like a professional.”
“So you came over here in October in a T-shirt.”
“I’m committed to the bit.”
They made it through about a third of the wine and most of a conversation about the Q4 reorg before Owen put his glass down on the coffee table, carefully, like it was the thing he’d been rehearsing.
“Can I tell you something kind of embarrassing?”
“That’s all you’ve told me for six weeks.”
“When you wore it. Tuesday.” Owen looked at his hands. “I went home and thought about it. You in it. A lot. Like, embarrassingly specifically.”
Adrian set his own glass down.
“How specifically?”
Owen’s ears went red. He didn’t look away, though, which Adrian gave him credit for. “You in it and not much else.”
Adrian got up, walked to the hallway closet, and came back with a dark bomber jacket over his arm. Not Owen’s. His own, nearly the same cut. He’d bought it Wednesday at lunch, which he was never going to admit.
“It’s not yours,” he said. “But it’s close.”
Owen’s mouth opened and nothing came out.
Adrian undid his shirt one button at a time while Owen watched from the couch like a man witnessing weather. Shirt off. Belt. Jeans. He left his boxers on, put the jacket on over bare skin, zipped it halfway up his chest, and stood there in his own living room feeling ridiculous and incredibly, embarrassingly hard.
“Like this?”
“Fuck,” Owen said, very quietly. “Yeah. Like that.”
“Come here, then.”
Owen came. He put both hands inside the open jacket and on Adrian’s ribs like he’d been waiting to do exactly that since the first time he forgot it, and kissed him. Not the careful office kiss from Tuesday with one ear on the elevator. A real one, deep and hungry, Owen’s thumbs dragging up over Adrian’s nipples under the satin lining until Adrian gasped into his mouth.
“Bedroom,” Adrian said. “Or I’m going to do this on the couch and you’ll never be able to sit on it at my birthday party.”
“You’re inviting me to your birthday party?”
“Bedroom, Owen.”
Owen pushed him down onto the bed and climbed over him with his knees on either side of Adrian’s hips, still fully dressed, looking down at him spread out in the jacket. He looked for so long that Adrian started to squirm.
“You’re staring.”
“I’m allowed. I’ve been staring at that chair for six weeks.” Owen dragged the zipper the rest of the way down, slow, and the jacket fell open. “Can I take these off?”
“Yes.”
He pulled Adrian’s boxers down and off, and then he just knelt there and wrapped his hand around Adrian’s cock and stroked it, slow, watching his face. Adrian arched up off the mattress, the jacket rustling under him.
“Owen.”
“Hmm.”
“Take your clothes off. This is extremely unfair.”
Owen laughed and did, clumsy with it, tangled in his own T-shirt for a second, and then he was naked and on top of him, and the feeling of all that skin, Owen’s thighs and chest and cock pressing down against him through the open jacket, made Adrian groan out loud.
They didn’t fuck that first time. They didn’t need to. Owen slid down and took Adrian into his mouth with a kind of earnest enthusiasm that was so exactly Owen that Adrian laughed and then swore and then couldn’t do either, just lay there with both hands in Owen’s hair and the jacket’s cuffs sliding over his wrists. Owen sucked him like he was trying to get it right, checking up at him through his lashes, adjusting every time Adrian’s breath changed, and Adrian found he was the one who couldn’t stop staring.
“Come up here,” Adrian said finally. “I want both.”
Owen crawled up and Adrian spat in his palm, which made Owen laugh, and took both of them in his hand at once. Slick, hot, Owen’s hips rocking down into his fist. Owen buried his face in Adrian’s neck and got a mouthful of jacket collar and didn’t care.
“You smell like it,” Owen said. “Like you smell like you in it. Fuck.”
“It’s not even your jacket.”
“I don’t care. I don’t care, Adrian, don’t stop—”
Adrian didn’t stop. Owen came first, shuddering, all over Adrian’s stomach and the satin lining, and the noise he made was so raw and surprised that it tipped Adrian right over after him.
They lay there, sticky, breathing.
“I came on your new jacket,” Owen said eventually.
“Yes.”
“That you bought. To wear for me.”
“I’m not confirming when I bought it.”
Owen lifted his head, grinning like he’d won something. “You bought it this week.”
“Wednesday,” Adrian admitted. “At lunch.”
Owen kissed him, delighted, and then fell asleep on top of him with his face in the collar.
Monday at 5:44, Adrian looked over at the chair beside his desk. Owen’s jacket was still there, exactly where he’d left it Friday afternoon.
At 5:47, work chat:
Owen: forgot my jacket again
Adrian picked up his phone instead.
it’s not forgotten. it’s here. so is mine. come get both
