the joke was the cover By Luna | 2026-08-31
— “the joke was the cover”
we were on the couch. his hand was on my thigh, had been since the movie started, just resting there, thumb tracing the inseam of my shorts like he wasn’t aware he was doing it. and he goes, not looking at me, into the tv, “ha. try and get me pregnant,” and laughs. like it’s the funniest thing anyone’s said all week.
i sat there for a second. ok. you can’t. we both know you can’t. that’s not how i’m built. so why’d you say it.
here’s the thing i’ve learned about him. he says the dirtiest things with a laugh tacked on, like the laugh makes it a joke, like the laugh means he didn’t mean it. but his hand doesn’t laugh. his hand stayed on my thigh. his thumb kept tracing. he said it and looked at me sideways, quick, the way you look at someone to see if they took the bait, and then he looked back at the tv like nothing happened.
the joke was the cover. i know that now. the joke meant he could say the filthiest thing in the room and if i laughed too it didn’t count as him asking. it was a trap with the door left open, and he was hoping i’d walk through it.
so i didn’t laugh. i turned my whole body toward him and i put my hand on top of his where it sat on my thigh and i said, quiet, “you sure that’s a joke.”
his thumb stopped moving. the tv kept going. he looked at me and the laugh was gone from his face, all of it, just his eyes, dark, considering me.
“what if it’s not,” he said. not a question. a door.
i climbed onto him. swung a leg over, straddled his lap, put my hands on his chest and felt his heart going fast under my palms. “then say it like you mean it,” i said.
he didn’t say anything. he flipped me. one hand on my hip, the other under my knee, and i was on my back on the couch cushions with my shorts already gone and his mouth on my neck and his hand between my legs and i wasn’t laughing either. the joke was over. it had been over the second i didn’t laugh.
“say it,” i breathed, because i needed him to. i needed him to say the thing out loud, the real thing, not the cover.
he bit my shoulder, gentle, and his breath was hot on my skin, and he said it. “fuck it. yeah. get me pregnant.” like he was admitting something he’d been holding since he first put his hand on my thigh.
and then he was inside me. no more joke. no more laugh. just his weight on me and his hand under my knee and his mouth on my throat and him moving, slow at first, then harder, like letting go felt better than holding the line, like the joke had been the only thing keeping him decent and now it was spent. i wrapped my legs around his waist and pulled him in deeper and said “yeah. yeah. do it,” and he did, his face in my neck, his breath ragged, his hand tight on my hip like he was afraid i’d disappear, and the couch cushions were under my back and the tv was still on and his hand was in my hair now, holding, and i came first, clenching around him, and he followed a second later with a sound that wasn’t a laugh and wasn’t a word, just a groan into my shoulder, and he stayed there, inside me, still, breathing hard against my skin.
for a long time after he just lay on me. heavy. safe. his face in my neck. his heartbeat slowing against my chest. he didn’t move to pull out. didn’t move at all, really, like he didn’t want the joke to end, like staying inside me was the only part of it that was true.
i ran my fingers through his hair. kissed his temple. he made a small sound, almost a laugh, almost not.
“was it good,” i said, soft, into his ear.
he lifted his head and looked at me, really looked, and his eyes were different now. softer. like the wall had come down and he’d decided not to put it back up.
“don’t make it a joke,” he said.
“i didn’t,” i said. “you did.”
he closed his eyes. pressed his forehead to mine. his hand found mine and laced our fingers together on the couch cushion above my head.
“yeah,” he said, very quiet. “i did.”
we stayed like that until the movie ended and the tv went to the menu screen and the blue light filled the room. he still hadn’t pulled out. i didn’t ask him to.
was it a joke. or were you asking.
i already knew the answer. the joke had been the cover. the asking was the truth underneath, and he’d been asking all along, with his hand on my thigh and his thumb on the inseam and the laugh he didn’t mean. and now the cover was off and he was still inside me and his forehead was on mine and neither of us was laughing.
that’s the part i’ll keep. not the couch or the cum or the way he flipped me. the part where he admitted the joke was the door, and he’d wanted me to open it.
